Sweet addictions...

Some things are best explained by visiting our parents' home as adults.

I'm fully convinced that my sweet-addictions stemmed from a well-stocked pantry.   These shelves are credited to my Dad!!

For years now my boys have fondly referred to my Dad's (Papa's) pantry as "the candy room."   At first glance into Papa's pantry --could this be the reason?

hmmm ... fortunately, now they can reach ALL the jars without exposing me to any most temptations ~ well, there are those gold wrapped almond Kisses Dad tries to hide from me {"hey ... while you're in there can you reach one for me?}

What?   Like I'm going to actually choose the Craisins strategically placed to provide a healthy option.   hah!

Such SWEET memories!

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N

That's right.

I am on vacation. I took two days last week and two days next week and this is the middle of my vacation.

I was so excited to have time off I spent Wednesday night at the salon getting my nails done. =)

Then Thursday went to spend time with my Dad… visiting the doctor and guiding him through the many choices he will have to make regarding his choices to treat prostate cancer.

Part of what he needs help with is physical labor. Since he can no longer manage the efforts necessary at an old house he owns.

This house, the uninhabited black hole, not-so-fondly called: the house of doom … well that's what my siblings and I call it (however, some siblings use terms not appropriate for blog content). I can't honestly say that I believe in possession of an inanimate object or a house being haunted, but I have a theory and seriously believe from the evidence gathered that a house can be "cursed".

In my opinion this house has been cursed !!!

Yes, cursed with …

procrastination indecision chaos plumbing leaks void of squareness destructive attacks of ... hatred disgust frustration pain bruises confusion infestation of insects undesirable animal nests and feces

… ewwww…

AND So much more that I can barely contain the emotion regarding the place.

Yet, this doesn't stop me from showing up in work clothes and an attitude void of sarcasm, as my dad needs help and this is what needs to get done!!!

Day 1 – At the job site I am instructed that my job was to load truck for the dump, which includes: cleaning the rooms where the ceiling and insulation was pulled down; vacuuming/bagging such materal and re-loading the truck for the dump; and then continuing to the front porch which was previously covered with plumbing and demolition materials (that would challenge any strong male) still needed to be loaded on the seriously lifted Ford 250 which I can barely see over the back bed – which means, my materials contribution needs to be lifted overhead in order to drop them into the bed… uhhh, yes, I skipped my trip to the gym for a shoulder/bicept workout and my core workout was taken care of while shoveling roofing materials from the ground to the wheelbarrow and then loading such debris onto the truck.

I have never been quite so happy for the sunset on a day of "vacation"… the invitation to eat, shower and hot tub at my brother's house was more than welcome. After relaxing, I spent the evening talking to Dad about his "treatment options" – stayed up too late and was thrilled to find the pillow.

Day 2 – I awoke at 6am. Showed up at my brother's house excited that I would at least be "driving" the BIG truck!! Yeehaw!

Then… Dad wasn't well (went back to bed at 8am); my nephew was sick; and the helpful bro-in-law said he needed a day off. Dang – didn't need to take the big truck after all.

But blessings and a surprise visit from my Tony is a God-send!!!

Still – I had to be one of the "guys" who unloaded the materials I sent to the truck the day before. Ugggh!! Yes, gloves on again, I dutifully went to the dump and unloaded; to the house to re-load and then unload that darn truck (skipped the gym – workout #2). Back at the house I cleared the site of nails so the drywall could be installed; then cleaned the site so others could function reasonably well around the areas (somehow I'm certain that tools found in the dirt, between open studs in framing, on stairs around the corner, and overhead on the closet shelf would be better utilized on the tool table)… a long day of running tools from one end of the house to the other, cleaning the worksite, renting a lift - finding grace to deal with the frustration of a cursed house? In the midst of chaos/remodel for sale … and the hatred thereof (whether the tasks, the house, or the work)… it's draining nonetheless as I once again am grateful for the food/shower/hot-tub and invitation for conversation with my favorite sis-in-law. Arriving at my parents' home I stayed up way too late with Mom, sorting clothing and talking about life … dragging my butt to bed and head to the pillow at 1am.

Day 3 – the alarm went off at 6, my butt moved off the bed at 7am. We had extra hands to help so the morning starts off with a bang – Dad feels better and is able to make an appearance. Mom shows up to move the boxes from the attic. Brother-in-law stays home, but my Tony shows up for a second day of effort and big brother is the trouper – sporting his Vicodin bottle – he is faithful to the task.

Emotions are high and voices raise over the boards going down on the kitchen floor; but peace is found again, the day moves on (slowly) the work seems monotonous and unproductive; but Dad asks for help finding materials in storage – I volunteer to go; upon arrival he apologizes for lack of a ladder – yeah, "no problem, Dad, that's why I work out" and like an experienced climber, I scaled the two levels of shelving 5' and 10' up . . . hmmm, found the venting but no gutters and looking down it appears quite clear that "getting down" is far more of a challenge than "going up" … ugh! Not to worry, I closed my eyes as I hung from my manicured fingertips swung down to the next level and jumped to the floor (workout #3, skipped the gym again).

Later back at the house we all anxiously waited and watched as the water was turned on ... holding our breath, we watched for leaks in plumbing (ughh, too many to fix, better start over) ... did I mention the house was cursed? Plans were made to revisit the bathroom and plumbing on Monday -- I am so glad I don't own a home right now.

It was three long days … and while I know vacation isn't normally spelled "e-x-h-a-u-s-t-i-o-n" I feel better to have participated in forward progression of work for selling the 'cursed' house. =|

Well, it's a theory -- and yet, my nails are still nicely manicured (thank God for gloves).

Past comfort…

Present pancakes – perfect peace.

Whoosh ~ the present moment was gone. Oddly I was back many years ago remembering days at my parents' house.

I'm the oldest of siblings still at home – and the only one allowed to stay up late enough to watch Dad prepare for his graveyard shift at his full-time job; which (barely) afforded him to continue his calling – full-time pastor of a small church.

After working his eight hour job; he'd catch a short nap, then spend the mornings with my younger siblings. I was at school by then, but it was fine – as I looked forward to evenings with Dad.

I'd sit near the sink and watch him shave; talk about my day while he applied a dab o' Brylcreem to his carefully positioned "comb-over do", and listen attentively to his fatherly wisdom while he completed his final act of grooming - splashing the Old Spice aftershave onto his freshly shaven face – yikes. {My legs get goose-bumps at the very thought of such an act.}

I twirled at those special moments – spending one-on-one time with Daddy. In those precious moments I was not just "number 4-of-7" I was his one and only Baby Girl (don't tell my sisters). It was as if all other six siblings were distant memories.

Dad's words have always been my comfort, whether spoken or written ~ his cards are meticulously chosen and always signed with personal thoughts. In his words - his voice - I find peace and security; feel assured of life and hope; and know the strength and wisdom he represents.

~

Remembering even farther back… when we lived overseas,Daddy would tuck me in last at bedtime (well, I was number 4-of-4 then and THE Baby Girl). After reading (sometimes instead of) the books he would tell stories – describing his day in the form of a story book (seems we were sans Dr. Seuss over there). Gradually he would switch gears and the story became about how life compares to the life of Joseph or King David in the Old Testament or Nicodemus and how Saul became Paul in the New Testament. Sometimes it was whatever he had studied from the Bible for the next day's classes to teach at the West African Bible College.

~

What exactly created this emotional flashback anyway?

Hmmm.

Earlier tonight I was having a conversation with Dad. He was describing his day at the hospital. He told me in detail "all" that happened throughout the day: he took 2 walks with the nurse; visited with his older sister; Mom brought my niece - Baby Girl to visit and she wanted to take home the BIG bear my boys and I brought for Papa. Every visitor commented on Jeffrey's colorful drawing which Grandma taped to the front of the shelf.

Dad's story was building to its climax as he proudly exclaimed he had his first solids. =)

~

As he described his first meal selection for dinner, it all came rushing back...

Pancakes and scrambled eggs for dinner ~ Dad's favorite meal!

We often would have breakfast foods at dinnertime to celebrate Dad being with family for dinner before he had to leave for work at night – most of the time to give Mom a break, he would prepare that meal.

~

Funny, I never made a connection that breakfast at dinner time with Dad was such a comfort. So without the calories of comfort food – the thought of my Dad eating his favorite meal sans tube, false teeth and all, I am twirling like I did as a little girl.

Settling in for bed I remember the sweet, strong sound of Dad's voice telling his day-in-a-life story; my mind, heart, and body at rest for the night.

Now that's the real thing...

She can breathe again.
Hospitals, illness, anxiety and stress seem inseparable.
I'm child #4, daughter #2 and #1 BabyGirl -- it has been four days since I'd heard my Dad's voice; well, other than a groan or painful "uh-huh" in response to a comfort question.
I called my Mum tonight checking on his status. She happened to be at his side in the hospital room visiting with two of their dearest friends.
We talked for a short while about his comfort, ability to communicate and his medical situation. Which was a relief, as the surgeon shared today that she would like to try a different option rather than immediately offer her remarkable skills with a scalpel to his bowel.
Yeah, it didn't sound any better as an unwritten thought.
~
Dad was sleeping when I called so I didn't want Mum to wake him; I asked her to tell him how many people were praying for him and which family members had emailed me to share their love and good wishes.
As she finished another story, I asked her to tell her friends "hello" from me; she did so, and I heard each of them respond with a "hello JoJo" in the background.
... and as if he could feel my anxiety my Dad made a noise that sound like "haah" which Mum interpreted as "hi".
I was grateful and at peace hearing even that much from him; but as I was saying "tell him I love him and I'll see him soon" -- the phone had already shuffled to his mouth and I heard him clearly say "HI! and THAT's the real thing!" in an almost normal voice.
It was the most he'd said to me while I sat in his room on Sunday; to me it was like a week's worth of discussions -- whew!!
Despite the fact that I can't breathe from a darn cold caught as soon as I left the hospital -- I am breathing freely -- as Daddy's little girl feels a whole lot better!!
That's the REAL thing!!!

Words that make a girl twirl…

Nope, not CHOCOLATE!!

I had this long post started all about why I felt like "twirling" around the room the other day at my Dad's house… just as I used to when I was a young girl. But tonight I'm just going to cut to the chase. (My friend says I tend to over-edit; which I've done already and it still didn't express what I want it to say.)

My Dad is incredible – he's the one whose gift with words set such a high standard for my choice in greeting cards (his are THE best) and speaking truth and loving people more than things.

I walked into Dad's house on Saturday and I see him playing with my niece (fondly known as Baby Girl); she being the newest granddaughter who he adores (and who barely lets him leave her sight).

As he saw me, he turned her around to show her who arrived; with warm, familiar words,

my Daddy announced:

"There's MY Baby Girl!"

That's when my heart twirled, eyes twinkled, and my spirit tingled as the little girl inside me spun wildly … giggling uncontrollably - never too old for a father's loving words!!

tee hee!

I live with boys…

Isn't that backwards? It sure seems backwards to me, since I’m the one who has a job, buys groceries and pays the rent, etc.   Truthfully, the boys own the majority of the landscape: ownership identified by quantity of Lego bricks, Hot Wheels, Dr. Seuss & Berenstain Bears books, backpacks, and MAN-sized shoes spread on the floor.

Yes, surprisingly enough with the neck brace gone – the clutter has returned (along with random, a-hem “demands”).  What’s with the thought that Mom (sitting the farthest from the kitchen) is the logical choice to get you another drink to go with the snack she managed to make just before collapsing?  Exactly!  A simple smile spoke – oh, I’ll get it myself.

We’ve all had that feeling – the one where you hold in the sarcastic remark to say something that sounds polite.

It happened last night for me.  I gave a rather polite response (with mental irritation hanging heavy on my tongue pressing it back until I nearly gagged); I thought nothing of it…

until…

Jason asked what was wrong and why was I using “that” voice.  Innocently, I inquired what he meant – uhh, “what WAS I thinking?”

He proceeded to identify THAT voice as my “tell” for frustration, disapproval or annoyance.

“When you sound like that there’s usually something wrong.  But I’m doing my homework; I put down the Gameboy when you asked.  What’s bothering you?”

Okay.  Flashback.

I remember as a new mom… there were precious moments when looking at his adorable little dimpled face, thinking –

"I can’t wait for the day you can communicate with me."

Hello!!

Of course, I was referring to “ma-ma” and “I wuv you”

NOT this intellectual inquisition of the state of my mental affairs because I’m “sounding” a little off my “Sweet Mom” game.

Turns out – he accurately deciphered my “tell”.   I am not a poker face (voice) Mom.   I don’t even win at Uno.

A voice tell – who knew?  I was trying to be nice and the act of holding back what my boys and I call “harsh words” I was using the “strong tone” which sounds like grinding fingernails on construction paper (they don’t have chalkboards, so they describe it as they ‘hear’ it).

In the sense of parenting I’m quite proud of the fact that the boys feel they can openly discuss life and have input in how these conversations take place in our home.  We use a lot of word pictures to describe emotions and behavior.  The key is to know each other well enough to create the word pictures from actual events –that’s how we get very impactful responses.

At times, I ignore the clutter and boy landscape in trade for reading on the couch and playing (losing) games on the carpet … careful not to lean on Lego bricks.

But there are limits.  Recently after looking at the floor – I shared that I felt sad; inquiring minds wanted to know why?  I pointed out that apparently the surviving Bionicles forgot to bury their dead after the battle – where’s the honor in that?   Groan

Holy Bionicles Batman ... it looks brutal.

An hour later the Lego body-removal vehicle was finally assembled and began it's work.

Tomorrow I’m going to wear the neck brace.

Gaining perspective...

Today is a gift. I knew they were getting married. Although I don’t know them well, they are family. My cousin’s son and his new wife were having a reception. I didn’t go; I was committed to another event. My parents called to tell me it was lovely; how nice it was to visit with family. However, they felt sad that the bride was unable to participate in the events as her headache was severe; incapacitated she rested in the back room. Later in the week they call again to say, they received an update call from my cousin sharing that after the receiption they took the bride to the emergency room as she had not felt relief from this excruciating head pain. After numerous tests and x-rays, the doctors discovered a tumor on the brain. After this news – the marriage excitement, joy, even the honeymoon, was over. The request for prayer was announced. ~ I imagined being 26 again. Finding my true love; planning the wedding, finally betrothed, we begin the first few hours of married life.
Twenty-four hours later… I stand in the ER hearing the news that life-changing surgery is imminent for my soul mate; a tumor threatens the life of this person I love most. The one to whom hours ago I promised myself completely; agreeing always to love, encourage, protect, and share the rest of days together – now, I can offer nothing (tangible anyway).
I can’t protect, help, heal or trade places – helplessly, I wait with parents and in-laws wondering, what now?
It's surreal.
Surgery is over. Awaiting biopsy. Helpless again.
Pray for courage and more strength. Whatever the challenge... we are promised the strength to proceed.
Next step -- more waiting.
Pray for good results.
~ Suddenly I'm reminded me of the many conversations I’ve had this week with friends… complaining of my frustrations, my circumstances, even my headaches.
Now I sit with heavy heart. I cannot even compare my simple worries of life, lack of sleep, skipping workouts, and other stresses to real life-changing health challenges. ~ Today I wrote and sent cards to a few people in my life; including my cousins.
Spreading gratitude, love and encouragement... to some people who have been faithful to stand strong with me over many years.
I commit to pray for others. I commit to care more about others than myself.
I commit to sharing love in words and actions with people in my life.
I commit to expressing how important each one is to me. Today I start with you. You are an extraordinary person. No matter how far apart we are – you are special. You are loved. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. I am blessed to have you in my life. I thank God for you! In the vast and amazing universe you are important to me. May you appreciate your life more today. Express openly your love to family and friends.
Always remember… you are a gift to me!
I love you!

Can they BE any cuter?

"Where's you? " That's what she said ... right after she saw this picture on my camera. Naturally, I had to accomodate her... Which is when I took this ... Oh... who, you ask is this lovely little one? Sorry, where are my manners. Blog, meet Maty. Maty is my 2 year old, uh-umm, "great" niece. {Yes, I have a nephew whose old enough to be married with a child.} She's still my niece, who is ... great. This is my Nephew, Mathew, and his wife, Miranda. Matlyn is their sweet little girl. They live south of Corvallis. Where they share space with a horse, some goats, half a dozen chickens, 2 dogs, a hot tub and a play structure -- in short, a little slice of heaven on earth. Which I was delighted to discover while attending the family BBQ this weekend. You see, Blog, I simply couldn't help myself. Maty was such a willing subject. Um, then again, maybe she was a little worried about the number of extended family members who had invaded... It was as if she followed me everywhere. hmmm. I secretly wondered if she knew that I had my camera at the ready. I am a sucker for random displays of 'cuteness'. Uh-oh, then enter ... her cousins! Jeffrey and Aaron covering their cousin Maty with sand. She's having SOOO much fun hmm... or perhaps demonstrating a damsel in distress??? Next, she wanted to introduce me to her horse, Tess. It was nice that she agreed to let her Mom hold cousin NaKysha (my 1 yr old niece) However. This lasted only a few minutes... when Maty decided she didn't want her Mom to hold any one else who qualified for "cuteness" photos. To keep the cuteness equation in tact ... we put Cutie 1 yr + Cutie 2 yr together and captured the sum of absolutely adorable!! Until ... yep - that look on NaKysha says it all. "THE look" that says ... I'm done with this cute session, now!!

Moving right along ... Uncle Steve (Grandpa to Maty) NaKysha's mom, is my sister Tammy. After about 50 pix of these two cuties on my camera. My boys were worried that I wanted a girl. NAHHH... I can't have them thinking like that... I wouldn't trade all the girl cuteness in the world for my boys -- who break through the perimeter of the fence, track down a snake, delivering it to me with such pride! NO WAY! I love that my boys will be boys!! Besides, check these out for cuteness.

What a shameless display of family fun!!
