dear August 2012 ...

you were such an 'exhausting' month.

Sunday - your 19th day it was my privilege to be baby coach for my little sister's delivery of baby Zariyah:

That was a glorious yet STRESSFUL day.   Quite a blur of events but that sweet baby arrived safely on your 19th day ---  Zariyah Danae    7lbs 8oz.  19inches long...
Sooo adorable.

The next day was her big sister's birthday:  NaKysha  turned 5 years old -- she's excited to have a baby to call her "own"...

Big brother was totally not impressed by having a little sister:  Damien will be 2 years old next month.

But THAT's not all

Earlier this week I walked-through the halls of high school again.  My oldest is officially a card-carrying freshman in high school...

only 30 years after I graduated.

Then the youngest says he doesn't need me to take him to the school...

he says:  "I'll walk to the school to get my [7th grade] schedule.   Then can I walk to the mall with my friends?"

Oh, did I forget to mention his girlfriend?

... this has been new and fun to watch -- her favorite color is purple (which is mine also, but my son now wears "my" favorite more often) LOL!!

Your month
also includes his many walks to the mall and then to the park with friends... and "Tiffany" -- thanks for such great weather in which he could get good exercise!!

Speaking of your wonderful weather, August, thanks for being so warm (hot even) and allowing lots of weekends to enjoy time with friends ...  my BFF and I got to spend a weekend at her house in Bend ~ it was a great time to relax and enjoy our friendship.

August, not only does your month end bring inevitable thoughts of school beginning and summer break ending, but this year it brings a heavy-heart as I heard my uncle Archie died on your 28th day.  I will miss him.

I have such mixed feelings that you are gone.  Your month was full of busy activities, work, baby showers, bridal showers, school shopping and so much more.  There were many opportunities where I learned more about patience, love, peace, and self-control.  You openly welcomed my expressions of frustration, joy, understanding, sorrow, comfort, and gratitude.

Goodbye... until next year August.

Barrettes, Band-Aids, batteries?

.... and he cutest birthday-girl ever !!
It was a birthday party for that (not-so-much-a-baby) Baby Girl. She’s such a little character at a fine young age of TWO; flitting from one place to the next (like a humming bird) so fast I can barely catch her on film.

Moving now at speeds much different from her initial arrival; which her mom will attest was a painfully slow and arduous process.

But I think I’ll start before THAT part!

This is a photo memory of her mom, with siblings #'s 4-6, at the hospital anxiously awaiting BabyGirl's arrival…

As promised ... skipping over the hours of labor; displaying the angelic nature of this wonderfully precious newborn (2007).

Here she is one year later ... spying her first birthday cake ... MMmmm!!

Now we are in the present … (well it was yesterday, the 20th so now it's the past... but you get what I mean)...

Hmm... not sure about cooperating in smiles for the camera.

Hello-Kitty Band-Aids... for a very active girl;

it's true... a girl can never too many hair thingies!

Wheee ! Now she has wheels...

The party isn't over until we eat cake!!!

okay if you're counting, yes, there are 3 candles... but the BIG one plays the happy b-day song (until you want to swallow the thing while lit or rudely smash it into the frosting) ... and sweet Baby Girl wants the BIG one on the cake!!

Yumm!! How many grandparents does it take to keep the frosting in the mouth of a 2-year old???

There was much more action to behold, with cousins and presents and all... but that is captured on the camera card of someone who remembered that "batteries" are essential at birthday celebrations !!!

Past comfort…

Present pancakes – perfect peace.

Whoosh ~ the present moment was gone. Oddly I was back many years ago remembering days at my parents' house.

I'm the oldest of siblings still at home – and the only one allowed to stay up late enough to watch Dad prepare for his graveyard shift at his full-time job; which (barely) afforded him to continue his calling – full-time pastor of a small church.

After working his eight hour job; he'd catch a short nap, then spend the mornings with my younger siblings. I was at school by then, but it was fine – as I looked forward to evenings with Dad.

I'd sit near the sink and watch him shave; talk about my day while he applied a dab o' Brylcreem to his carefully positioned "comb-over do", and listen attentively to his fatherly wisdom while he completed his final act of grooming - splashing the Old Spice aftershave onto his freshly shaven face – yikes. {My legs get goose-bumps at the very thought of such an act.}

I twirled at those special moments – spending one-on-one time with Daddy. In those precious moments I was not just "number 4-of-7" I was his one and only Baby Girl (don't tell my sisters). It was as if all other six siblings were distant memories.

Dad's words have always been my comfort, whether spoken or written ~ his cards are meticulously chosen and always signed with personal thoughts. In his words - his voice - I find peace and security; feel assured of life and hope; and know the strength and wisdom he represents.

~

Remembering even farther back… when we lived overseas,Daddy would tuck me in last at bedtime (well, I was number 4-of-4 then and THE Baby Girl). After reading (sometimes instead of) the books he would tell stories – describing his day in the form of a story book (seems we were sans Dr. Seuss over there). Gradually he would switch gears and the story became about how life compares to the life of Joseph or King David in the Old Testament or Nicodemus and how Saul became Paul in the New Testament. Sometimes it was whatever he had studied from the Bible for the next day's classes to teach at the West African Bible College.

~

What exactly created this emotional flashback anyway?

Hmmm.

Earlier tonight I was having a conversation with Dad. He was describing his day at the hospital. He told me in detail "all" that happened throughout the day: he took 2 walks with the nurse; visited with his older sister; Mom brought my niece - Baby Girl to visit and she wanted to take home the BIG bear my boys and I brought for Papa. Every visitor commented on Jeffrey's colorful drawing which Grandma taped to the front of the shelf.

Dad's story was building to its climax as he proudly exclaimed he had his first solids. =)

~

As he described his first meal selection for dinner, it all came rushing back...

Pancakes and scrambled eggs for dinner ~ Dad's favorite meal!

We often would have breakfast foods at dinnertime to celebrate Dad being with family for dinner before he had to leave for work at night – most of the time to give Mom a break, he would prepare that meal.

~

Funny, I never made a connection that breakfast at dinner time with Dad was such a comfort. So without the calories of comfort food – the thought of my Dad eating his favorite meal sans tube, false teeth and all, I am twirling like I did as a little girl.

Settling in for bed I remember the sweet, strong sound of Dad's voice telling his day-in-a-life story; my mind, heart, and body at rest for the night.

Contrasting views...

While sorting through photos I came across this beauty.
As I'm thinkin' of a blog comment to appropriately depict the innocence and sweetness of the moment.  Hmmm, so adorable...
I was interrupted; the pause of my clicking the keyboard seemed a perfect opportunity for the younger of my two incredible boys to ask for assistance downloading a new picture for his bedroom door.
Yep, I lost my train of thought on that one.
I sat wondering if he knew how aptly it described his room...  alas, he had caught the full meaning as he showed me that he added a hand-drawn nuclear waste icon and a skeleton too.
But that's not all -- about 15 minutes later (still no sign of a blog thought) he looked curiously cute yet somewhat suspicious.  I followed cautiously as he took my hand, asked me to close my eyes, and opened that newly decorated door (now clearly marked "DO NOT ENTER!")
With a flick of the light switch and uncovered eyes... oh, the irony -- could this really be
                        a clean room?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Words that make a girl twirl…

Nope, not CHOCOLATE!!

I had this long post started all about why I felt like "twirling" around the room the other day at my Dad's house… just as I used to when I was a young girl. But tonight I'm just going to cut to the chase. (My friend says I tend to over-edit; which I've done already and it still didn't express what I want it to say.)

My Dad is incredible – he's the one whose gift with words set such a high standard for my choice in greeting cards (his are THE best) and speaking truth and loving people more than things.

I walked into Dad's house on Saturday and I see him playing with my niece (fondly known as Baby Girl); she being the newest granddaughter who he adores (and who barely lets him leave her sight).

As he saw me, he turned her around to show her who arrived; with warm, familiar words,

my Daddy announced:

"There's MY Baby Girl!"

That's when my heart twirled, eyes twinkled, and my spirit tingled as the little girl inside me spun wildly … giggling uncontrollably - never too old for a father's loving words!!

tee hee!

Celebrations...

Maybe if you hum something...
This is my first slide show!
NaKysha helped me celebrate my birthday last month.
I bought her a present, since she's too young to buy one for me.
Jeffrey loves to lick the frosting so he stayed near the cake.
Jason... hmm; he was the much needed photographer -- you know how that goes.
Hope you enjoyed my first attempt at entertainment.
Right, I agree.  Next time I will add music - I couldn't find the song I wanted in the right format.
My back-up was a bust - I think Miriam and KL have had just about enough of  "If You're Happy and You Know It."  *grins*
Yeah, next time ... a song would be nice.

Can they BE any cuter?

"Where's you? " That's what she said ... right after she saw this picture on my camera. Naturally, I had to accomodate her... Which is when I took this ... Oh... who, you ask is this lovely little one? Sorry, where are my manners. Blog, meet Maty. Maty is my 2 year old, uh-umm, "great" niece. {Yes, I have a nephew whose old enough to be married with a child.} She's still my niece, who is ... great. This is my Nephew, Mathew, and his wife, Miranda. Matlyn is their sweet little girl. They live south of Corvallis. Where they share space with a horse, some goats, half a dozen chickens, 2 dogs, a hot tub and a play structure -- in short, a little slice of heaven on earth. Which I was delighted to discover while attending the family BBQ this weekend. You see, Blog, I simply couldn't help myself. Maty was such a willing subject. Um, then again, maybe she was a little worried about the number of extended family members who had invaded... It was as if she followed me everywhere. hmmm. I secretly wondered if she knew that I had my camera at the ready. I am a sucker for random displays of 'cuteness'. Uh-oh, then enter ... her cousins! Jeffrey and Aaron covering their cousin Maty with sand. She's having SOOO much fun hmm... or perhaps demonstrating a damsel in distress??? Next, she wanted to introduce me to her horse, Tess. It was nice that she agreed to let her Mom hold cousin NaKysha (my 1 yr old niece) However. This lasted only a few minutes... when Maty decided she didn't want her Mom to hold any one else who qualified for "cuteness" photos. To keep the cuteness equation in tact ... we put Cutie 1 yr + Cutie 2 yr together and captured the sum of absolutely adorable!! Until ... yep - that look on NaKysha says it all. "THE look" that says ... I'm done with this cute session, now!!

Moving right along ... Uncle Steve (Grandpa to Maty) NaKysha's mom, is my sister Tammy. After about 50 pix of these two cuties on my camera. My boys were worried that I wanted a girl. NAHHH... I can't have them thinking like that... I wouldn't trade all the girl cuteness in the world for my boys -- who break through the perimeter of the fence, track down a snake, delivering it to me with such pride! NO WAY! I love that my boys will be boys!! Besides, check these out for cuteness.

What a shameless display of family fun!!
