Sharing while I still can . . .

Seems crazy that another year is nearing at it's end ... doesn't it seem like the world spins faster and faster?  The days, months, years fly by AND kids of all things ... grow up too quickly.

Seriously?  If I can count on anything I know that time keeps ticking away; today my son is one day closer to being 18. Hmm, only 18 more days to be exact, but whose counting right?

A couple weekends ago my nephews wife took Jason's senior pictures.  I look at at least one of my favorites every day (technology ~ another speedy friend of mine~ allows my smartphone to display a photo of my boy when he calls me and I easily scroll through many photos whenever I like).

Today I share my incredible, nearly adult son ~ Jason Lyon ~ with my friends.  He is in his senior year at Tigard High... he loves to read, make music on any instrument including his perfect pitch voice.  I'm less than tall next to this 6-4 young man who makes me feel like a giant in his world.  He frequently speaks the most awesome words "I love you, Mom!"

Jason has a kind, empathetic, compassionate and strong spirit.  He identifies and befriends anyone who has been misunderstood and feels less than loved.  He is a champion for respect, honestly and wisdom.  He makes me proud to be his Mom!

There still are moments I look at him and wish I could rock him gently in my arms, and remind him...

I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living
my baby you'll be.

Random moments, black & white

kitten photos...

His name is Sparra           [uh, think pirate - Captain Jack Sparrow Arrr!]

Right ...  well, this guy looks "adorable"

Much like the Captain ...

sometimes,
he actually is adorable

and those are the moments when one might hear two teen boys say the word
"A D O R A B L E " (out loud even)
But truthfully, he's "annoying" ... still cute and cuddly {in those random moments} but ANNOYING.

Who knew??

Parenting techniques that worked so well with my boys are simply useless!!

The thing about using love & logic is that kittens don't care if you love them or how logical it is to NOT bite or scratch or wound the person who feeds them.   Arrrgh!!

See how these eyes tell a story that looks much like curiosity …

but quickly they turn into CRAZY-eyes and a holy terror kitten runs wildly around trying to bite and scratch anything in the vicinity of its claws.

Case in point, bare legs ...  EEK!

Legs which cannot go walking around bare as this might happen ...

(yes, he's caught mid-air mid-attack, yes I have the marks to prove it!   Hmmmph.

But they love him, little terror Sparra ...

only adorable moments for me are when he sleeps!!

shh, don't wake him up!!

      Millie thinks he's annoying too...
then again she bops him in the head & takes a cat nap...

Ooh, no ... I'm thinking he's plotting an attack of the toes ...

Who says rescuing kittens is humane ... what about rescuing me?!!!

I'm off to run some errands ... why is it he sleeps while I'm gone and is awake when I'm home... tell me they grow up quickly like my kids ~ a sophmore and 8th grader {way more mature than their grade or age}.

Livin' life happy ~ until my next 'rant'.

Beginnings ... endings ....

It's a cruel realization when a mother watches the beginning and ending all in one event!  Aaauuughhh….

It actually started at the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year (it just took this long to feel it sink in!!)

Jeffrey plays in the final 2012 band concert in Beginning Band ...

Jeffrey found new life in music when he decided to join Beginning band in middle school.   He chose flute and has practiced faithfully always working hard to be worthy of first chair....  he’s anxiously looking forward to next year in Intermediate Band and has already auditioned to play in Jazz Band (for which he will learn a new instrument – Alto Sax)… hmmm, I sense a theme forming.

THEN after the concert … my heart skipped a beat and froze as I watched my young boy who suddenly seemed so different to me  ~  perhaps it was my angle, no my vision was fine ... I do see a girl clinging to his shirt and staring into his eyes walking backwards in time with each of his forward steps…  YIKES!  This being the same kid who at the beginning of the school year looked too young to be in middle school, thought it was weird that girls liked texting him… but now stands five foot six on size 11 shoes ~ happily walking along through the crowd of band students with a female cling-on stuck to his shirt.    [Ughhh say it isn’t so ….]

Jason plays his FINAL concert Jazz / Advanced Band ...

It becomes more apparent every day that my oldest son will be leaving middle school and this six foot one boy with size 13 feet will be hurled into the world of high school …where his already whirled hormones and furled emotions are exposed to exponential disturbances.   Ugghhh   (I dare not even attempt to capture its depth, as I think “been there, done that” works with the HUGE adjustment for ‘gender’ difference.)

In case you didn’t recognize Jason, he’s the (not-so-natural) copper-haired guy standing head and shoulders above the rest… can’t miss him!

Hair styles and colors come and go, but all in all they both have big hearts, LOVE music, and they shock me with their mature approach to life and responsibility.

Just the other day Jason took his own money to school to pay for a lost library book – we didn’t even have the conversation about why he should pay for it not me… he just took responsibility for it.   I was, of course, genuinely sad that he had to pay for a lost book; but the fact that a child didn’t feel entitled to a parent’s pocketbook and the right for someone else to pay for his oversight --  yep, I am one proud momma!   [end of story … someone else found the book and turned it in … so no fee was due.]

Not to be over looked is Jeffrey’s refreshing display of responsibility.   He remembers to pull the clothes from his PE bag  (Oh thank you, Lord) and promptly takes the offending clothes to the washer all items from boys shared hamper; promptly begins the load of laundry and typically remembers to follow through to the dryer, folding and putting away (at some point his bro’ is involved in the folding/put away of his own stuff though).  He uses his own money to buy donuts when he goes somewhere with his friends … and wants to save up to buy his own pair of custom Nikes.

♥

I continue to enjoy the blessings of being a mom … even while giving hugs in the upward direction (yes, with heels on too) it’s not such a bad deal.

    Belief Statement Essay
Visualize all the bloody cold wars coming to a halt because we learned to treat each other equally.

I believe we should all act equally, but have our own unique personalities.  I believe this because I have been treated unfairly, and it just doesn’t feel right.  You almost want to start a war in retaliation because it has such a bad feeling on your life.

Here is my perspective on the chain of events that ends up in death, war and other nasty stuff like that.

Stage 1, the Kid. The kid feels bad about something or he/she’s getting bored and he figures out some one’s weakness and exploits it to get a reaction. They begin to think it’s funny and start to get as many of their friends/others to join in. The person becomes such an out-cast that the teasing is no-longer teasing and it’s now just being mean. Then when the so called out-cast tries to tell a teacher, the teacher says something and will not commit to it (not all teachers are that way). That is not being equal or nice; whatever someone might say it will never be equal.

Stage 2, the Bully. The kid soon feels power making fun of the kid and starts to make fun of others too. The kid becomes the bully and gets in trouble more than the other kids. He soon gets more people to get in trouble and then the school is wreck. None of that would happen if we all treated each other equal.

Stage 3, the Criminal. The bully grows-up and thinks that nothing will happen if he hurts or kills someone. SO the criminal starts a gang and robs small banks, starts drugs and eventually it’s a bad city. Then the cops retaliate with a war on crime. If only the kid treated the other person EQUAL then none of that would have happened.

Here is why I say we should all be unique. Without being different (in a good way) it would be like taking away color in the entire world. You couldn’t play slug-bugs; you wouldn’t care about a rain-bow, and you couldn’t paint a beautiful picture because, well, it would have been painted already. So we all need to treat each-other equally but still have our own beliefs and religions.

There would be no wars because no one could be left-out; we would accept everyone into our society and no-one would feel sad unless some-one died; then everyone who knew him would be as sad just as if their father died.

We would all be happy, there would be no crime because no-one would want make others have a miserable life. We could support each-other and no-one would be homeless to. We still may have a president who makes decisions, but he will never be more important than anyone else. There would be winning and losing but there would be no bragging or higher rank. We would have supported those in need by giving our own work/labor for free.

I believe we all need to treat everyone equally,
but still remain unique.

I believe, we all have a purpose.

Age Poem

At twelve I lived for the delicious chocolate-chip cookies my Mom and I made on Wednesday nights.

I lived for rock-band and staying up till 11:00 pm playing the endless setlist 1.

I lived for the endless nerf wars that 'the Jeffreys' and I would have (that they would win).

I lived for the times when we all would cuddle on the couch and watch a movie.

I lived for the times when Jeffrey and I would play fetch with Eddie and Jeffrey would hit the stop-sign 150 ft away

I lived for my friends and family and the help they have given me.

I lived for the times where we would play Mario Kart and watch Mom lose … horribly.

I lived because I wanted to Live.

But what I really live for is music, for getting into the emotion of the song and falling like a feather into the dark blue sea of emotion, music and love.

So music is what I really live for.

Whatcha gona be ...

when you grow up?
The question is commonly asked; the answers are rarely identical.
Here's what I heard:

Jason: I want to be an aeronautical engineer for the military; I would like to be a pilot, and a pastor (not really in that order). I think that means I have to go to college a few more years; but that’s really what I want to be – oh and I'd like to play professional basketball and be a good musician too.

Jeffrey: I just want to be me!

Jason: But what do you want to “do” when you grow up, you know, to make money or somethin'?

Jeffrey: Oh, I’d like to drive a monster truck and race cars. What kind of degree do I need for that?

[ mom is grateful big brother answered first -- without hestitation in fact -- the answer just rolled off his tongue while Mom was holding hers ... huh?? ]

Jason: Probably a physics degree; you'll need to know about trajectory of cars as you run them over. It would also be very helpful in determining speed, adjusting suspension and other important factors for racing too.

Jeffrey: Oh, that would be good. I’d like to be an artist too – I’m going to paint my truck pink!!

Mom: I want to grow up to have a good self-concept & be at least half as smart as my boys!
